Manchester born Len Johnson won the Australian version of the British Empire middleweight championship but was barred from fighting for championships at home because of the colour of his skin. He later became a prominent member of the local Communist Party and a social and political activist in Manchester’s Moss Side. A trade unionist and community leader, he attended the pivotal 5th Pan-African Conference in Manchester in 1945 and was co-founder of the New International Society, a campaigning platform for black activism. Len was a remarkable man; a fighter in every way.
